The Office of Diversity is excited to host a series of events during the month of November in which the University community can explore, examine, and celebrate its many stories as the very substance of who we are– a diverse community of people that has much to learn from one another about the great human story.
This November, we hope that you will take time for the fascinating question: What’s YOUR story?

All Saints Day - Dia de los Muertos- Sugar Skull decorating
Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to the ancestors; it honors both death and the cycle of life. In Mexico, neighbors gather in local cemeteries to share food, music, and fun with their extended community, both living and departed. The celebration acknowledges that we still have a relationship with our ancestors and loved ones that have passed away.

An Evening of Spirituals with Sankofa: An Ensemble of The Spirituals Project in Concert
The Spirituals Project is a broad-based initiative to explore the many, varied dimensions of African American spirituals as art form, tradition and tool; and to invite all people to experience the joy and power of this dynamic music and gift from African Americans to the world. Sankofa is a 25- member ensemble dedicated to sharing the beautiful concertized versions of African American Spirituals. The word sankofa is a Akan (West African) word that translates roughly to “go back and get it.” The backward looking Sankofa bird is a symbol that underscores the importance of learning from the past as we move toward building the future.

Sonny’s visits put a personal face to big issues such as the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over “informed consent” and whether we control the stuff we’re made of, and should share in the profits.
