Regis Diversity Events – October 2011

Diversity at Regis University

At Regis University, the term “diversity” affirms our faith-inspired commitment to build an inclusive community that values the dignity and contributions of all our members. In this community, human differences thrive in a learning environment characterized by the Jesuit traditions of mutual respect and the pursuit of justice. Age, gender, race/ethnicity, class, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and other human differences contribute to the richness and vitality of our living community.

What Did You Do to These Forms and What Do I Do With Them?
New Faculty: Have you received notifications from ODS regarding student
academic and/or testing accommodations? If not, you will at some point. Many of our ODS forms have moved to an electronic format this year as we strive to go green. Returning Faculty: Do you need a refresher on working with the ODS and our many, many forms? Do you have any questions or concerns on how to work with students who have self-identified to our office? Are there things you would like to see improved? This will be a great opportunity to ask questions and discuss how faculty and ODS can work together in order to support students with disabilities.
12:00-1:00 ALC (Claver Hall) Room 20

October 8-9: Diversity Student Leadership Retreat
Through this retreat we want to strengthen the relationships between the members of the affinity groups, motivate them to be part of important leadership roles at Regis, and to develop a greater understanding of what it means to be diverse, to accept diversity of others, to acknowledge the beauty of diversity through small and large group discussions and finally how to promote diversity at Regis. In addition, we hope to give the opportunity of minorities to connect with each other and create a supporting network.

Disability Etiquette & Respect for Others: How to Work with People Who Have Disabilities
What does etiquette have to do with people who have disabilities? We treat everyone one the same, right? Wrong. Sensitivity toward people with disabilities is not only in the spirit of the ADA, it makes good business sense. You don’t have to feel awkward when dealing with a person who has a disability. This brown bag discussion will provide some basic tips for you to follow. This workshop is open to anyone (Faculty, staff, students).
12:00-1:00 MNH 136

October 19: Privilege Walk and Discussion
The purpose of the Privilege Walk is to learn to recognize how power and privilege can affect our lives even when we are not aware it is happening. This interactive activity will help demonstrate how social identifiers that are out of participants’ control have affected their privilege and the rights of members of their community. Participants will be encouraged to become aware and to critically reflect on their personal privileges associated with race, ethnicity, class, ability, religion and sexual orientation. The purpose of this activity is not to blame anyone for having more power or privilege or for receiving more help in achieving goals, but to have an opportunity to identify both obstacles and benefits experienced in our life.
